cool…celebrating ‘mother’ – the images of heidi lender

Gosh we mothers can do it all.   Loving the tongue-in-cheek images of LA based photographer, Heidi Lender.  Using a wall, black tape and some artful props, she acts out all the roles that we mothers do.   I think the handyman is pretty funny.

Apart from this series, Heidi is a pretty talented photographer/artist.  Her work is deeply personal, she draws on her own life events to make images that resonate. You can see more of her work on her website  or follow her on instagram.

Cool… dangerous shoes by Louboutin

Cool… dangerous shoes by Louboutin

Have you seen the photos of Christian Louboutin and his atelier in The Selby?  Owing a few pairs of Louboutins myself, I can attest to the fact that though beautifully made, they aren’t the most comfortable of footwear, but apparently this is because I wear too high heels for my size 37 feet.

Interesting to see that apart from creating shoes for celebrities like Dita von Teese, he also likes experimenting with shoe design.   I wonder if a ballerina could walk in those pointe shoes?  My pick for the most uncomfortable looking pair of shoes are the ones with the overly long and pointy heels.

Aside from peeking at his experiemental shoes, I am also a huge fan of those skylights, which were apparently were inspired by the rooftops of Paris, which, of course, are the most romantic in the world.

Kujo’s Chinese New Year Cards

Kujo’s Chinese New Year Cards

Chinese New Year in HK is always a time of excitement so Sally and I wanted to celebrate the Year of the Snake with some HK inspired CNY cards.  We both love the architecture of the typical tong lau and with the addition of a few red lanterns and some metallic gold foil, we’ve come up with these cute designs!

The snake is the 6th sign of the cycle, which lasts 12 years.   This year, the main element is water, so we call the period from the 10th February 2013 to the 30th of January 2014, the year of the water snake.   The snake is an interesting sign, outwardly modest but quite cunning &  affectionate to family and friends.

In the home, the snake is very refined: liking subtle colours and preferring a few pieces of high quality rather than a few poor ones.   Relaxation and harmony are the key to a snake’s interior choices together with an appreciation for luxury.

Happy year of the snake everyone!   I’m going skiing- what are you doing?

Btw, all our cards are customizable for corporates at great rates….talk to us if you have any questions….

New Ikat cushions on the way….

New Ikat cushions on the way….

I have been busy collecting silk and silk velvet ikats from Uzbekistan to make into our range of very popular cushions.    In addition to graphic black and white, we are adding rich greens and pinks and amazing blues and corals to lead us into summer.  Most of the designs are in contemporary weaves of dots and, the perennial favourite, chevrons.

As you may know ikats are a traditional weave, found all over Asia and central Asia.   The fabric is handwoven tightly on narrow looms.   The dyes are generally natural, although contemporary ikats can have more jewel like tones by using synthetic dyes.

The feel of these cushions are amazing & we are mixing them with leathers and linens to give the cushions a bit of an edge.  Backed with Libeco belgian linen and with the detail of mother of pearl buttons, you won’t find anything more luxurious.

We’ll have them ready in store after Chinese New Year.

facebook facelift

Is it just me or do you find the interface of facebook really ugly and old fashioned.   As blue goes, though distinctive, I find that particular shade of blue quite ugly.   Don’t get me started on the sidebars…

Fred Nerby’s interface is elegant, fun and engaging.   Please facebook, visit your plastic surgeon soon.

cool…instagram inspiration

Nowadays, technology means that inspiration is only a click away.   One of my favorite sites is Instagram- a voyeuristic peek into the lives of others.   Most instagramers take quite humdrum photos but I love looking at the images of a few of the people that I follow especially the instagrams of amandajanejones and thesisglamorous.   I look for great compositions & interesting subject matter – it helps that they travel too!

As you can see- the simplest things make the most inspiring images….

cool..h + m Home

cool..h + m Home

Last year, during  my last trip to Copenhagen, I came across the H+M home store in the centre of Copenhagen.   It was the only non-Danish design that I saw on my whole trip.

Like the clothes version of H+M, everything was super cheap, including linen sheets for around HKD300 for example.  The display of the goods was the most interesting thing-there was only one sample of everything and to buy you picked up a tag and took it to the counter.   I had seen a catalogue previously, but unfortunately the real thing didn’t look as good.   Rather like H+M clothes, I suppose.

However, the styling of the catalogues are the best thing about the designs.   I would totally love to live in a bedroom like the first image if I was a little girl. I’ve got a thing for fluoro pink, pom poms and balloons.    I’m not a huge fan of black walls but the second image makes those cushions look great.   Loving the sparkly silver.

you can check out H+M home online here, not sure if they deliver to HK yet, but I am sure the home section will be here soon.

& the colour of the year is…

2 January 2013

& the colour of the year is…

We love green here at Eclectic Cool as you know.  So we were thrilled to hear that PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, a lively, radiant, lush green, is the Color of the Year for 2013.   Described as “Lively. Radiant. Lush… A color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony.”

I have a  partiality to emerald green- it is my birthstone & I am married to an Irishman of course- so I guess it is in my blood.   Every colour looks good against a splash of green- it is 2013’s neutral.  It symbolises life and growth & nothing is more rejuvenating than looking out onto a vista of green fields and taking in the scent of foliage.
