Cool…NoMad Hotel, NYC

I feel it could be time for a trip to NYC- I can’t believe I was there a year ago, it seems like yesterday.

Last time we stayed at the James Hotel in Soho.  It was a great stay and we had a fab time.  This time, I quite fancy the NoMad Hotel.   Designed by Jacques Garcia and based on interiors from his youth, the interiors mix vintage with contemporary to get a, you guessed it, eclectic style.

However, this is no mish mash of elements, but a finely considered interior that is reminiscent of those elegant New York movies of the 30s and 40s.   I could see myself relaxing in that claw foot bath.

Yep, this one definitely goes on the list.

Cool…global traveller trend

The boho world traveller trend seem to show now sign of abating. The inclusion of exotic textiles in interiors has also become a trend, suzanis, ikats, even linens remind us of international travels. Net-a-porter had a huge spread on summer travels which you can take a look at here– it made me want to jump on a plane.

For me, I love an exotic textile whether it be to wear or display. I’m tired of black and winter tones, roll on summer.

Happy St Patrick’s Day

Happy St Patrick’s Day

It’s St Patrick’s Day today.  This time last year I was in New York enjoying the parade and a tactical visit to the Met.   Today, it is warm and gorgeous here in Hong Kong.   You may not know this but I am married to an Irishman so today is a day to remember.

I came across the images of Ireland on the blog {this is glamorous} and they did remind me of all the fabulous times we have had travelling there.

My husband is from Dublin and though I enjoy it as a city, I think the most memorable times have been traversing the countryside.  I can’t tell you how beautiful it is and well worth spending some time.

I put together my own mood board of what to wear as it is always raining- never hard, just drizzle.  It is always what my father-in-law would have called a ‘soft’ day.  It is always best to stay warm and dry, hence the wellies, warm jumper and trench.   All those rough textures need to be balanced by the softest and most luxurious cami you can find- you can’t beat those by Carine Gilson.

Next time you’re in Ireland, give the Blarney Stone a kiss from me.   Happy St Patrick’s Day.

Cool…stuff from the web 1

I seem to spend quite a bit of time following links around the web and just like a physical ‘flaneur’ this wandering can lead you to unexpected, but interesting, places. This is the first in an occasional post about the fun, crazy and interesting around the web.

You can see by the images that they are diverse…from the examples of art to the cartoon bags to the photography to pantone food.

Enjoy- and use the links as a starting point for your own flaneur.

Cool photos…mike stimpson

It’s amazing what you can do with Lego.  I used to love my Lego kitchen ( no comment about gender stereotyping- my brother got a Lego construction kit) and I did spend quite a number of years stepping on bits of Lego left on the floor when my children were younger- ouch!

I am loving these recreations of famous images reinterpreted with Lego by photographer, Mike Stimpson.   A sense of humour or irony?

Cool…Sandra D’Auriol Spring Show

I am always excited when I receive Sandra’s  new show invitations for her new collections and this collection is a standout.   Sandra’s very original and classy design sense are incredibly distinctive.  My pieces are always commented upon EVERY time I wear them-no exceptions!

Luscious hand cut jade pieces and other semi precious stones, mixed with precious materials: grey diamonds and gold- these pieces are substantial and striking and will give any look a touch of distinction.

Love, love, love.

Check out her new show at Sin Sin Annexe, 52 Sai Street, Sheung Wan

Tuesday , 27th  and Wednesday 28th March 2012

And, as with all her shows, Sandra donates all her profits to charity- isn’t that a great excuse to treat yourself to a new spring piece.

Cool…the best shelter magazines

Cool…the best shelter magazines

I do love a printed magazine, but I am loving the new online home magazines that you can find on the net. I’ve picked the best four in my opinion-but am open to suggestions!

Matchbook Magazine  is tagged ” a field guide to a charmed life” and is characterized by its ladylike images, bright colours and female focussed stories.  It does have some wonderful interview with American designers and some great peeks into their private spaces.

Est Magazine is based in Australia and every page shows the Aussie clean aesthetic- it is all bright spaces with splashes of colour.  It has a very heavy bias towards Scandinavian interiors, which personally I love but not a lot of vintage.

Array Magazine is the mag for the New York Design Center and encompasses a range of styles from Hamptons relaxed to the Soho Cool to formal Fifth Avenue.  Again they access great US designers and design writers which is always interesting.

The first, biggest and, some would argue, the best shelter mag is Lonny.   Founded in October 2009 by designer Michelle Adams and photographer Patrick Cline, Lonny is bi-monthly and accesses cool interiors of the rich and famous in the design world such  Cath Kidston to Kelly Wearstler.

The best thing about these mags is that they are 1. free 2. land in your inbox and 3. they generally link straight to advertisers and stores that sell the products.   If following design blogs is too time consuming, sign up to one or all of these.  It really is one of the highlights of my day when one of these lands in my inbox.

Cool…tilt-shift

Cool…tilt-shift

I recently bought a tilt-shift lens as a take lots of photos of interiors. A tilt-shift lens allows you to line up perspective…but it also has another fun effect: it can distort the perspective, by playing with depth of field, so much that it can make cities look like toy towns.

Israeli artists Efim Graboy and Daria Turetski have created ‘minilook kiev’, a short stop-motion film in which the Ukrainian city has been captured.

To complete this film, the artists created painstakingly created 25,000 images of kiev over five days and two nights with a canon 550d camera. They then chose 4500 individual frames to make the final video.  The result is a bird’s eye view in a busy city.   They look like they have enhanced the saturation of colours in the film, giving it even more of a toy-like effect.
